About Us


The Cape Teachers’ Professional Association was established in 1967 and the official launch took place in Athlone, South Africa from 29 - 30 June 1967. Mr DR Ulster was the first duly elected president of the CTPA. The CTPA is the oldest progressive teachers’ union in South Africa. The CTPA was also instrumental in assisting the process of transformation in a Democratic South Africa.

CTPA’s VISION:-
The CTPA strives to be preferred teachers union in South Africa by:
· Organizing members and uniting them into a strong democratic Union;
· Improving the quality of teaching and learning;
· Enhancing the professional status of educators; and
· Improving the economic welfare of its members.

HOW DOES THE CTPA OPERATE?
CTPA provides services to educators, learners and the community at large. It is a teachers union with a democratic system of governance. The National Office Bearers manage the programme work of the union:

· President
· Deputy President
· Vice President: Finance
· Vice President: Labour & Legal matters
· Vice President: Media & Communication
· Vice President: Membership & Marketing
· Vice President: Professional Affairs

Through the Portfolios which they manage, the Vice Presidents provide programmes such as teacher development, extra training, student aid through Saturday classes, and extensive bursary schemes, Workshops & Seminars regarding OBE, RNCS, Maths Olympiads, leadership training, etc.
The union has members in all nine provinces in South Africa, but the greatest concentration of members are found in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and the Free State.
As a professional Union, the CTPA is placing a high priority on the interest and the welfare of the child and the programmes and projects are geared to have the major outcome of the best education possible for our children.
